When to make your first finance hire (and what to hire)

Controller, analyst, or CFO? The order matters more than founders think. A simple framework for sequencing your first three finance hires by stage.

This is mock thought-leadership content for the template. Replace it with the real article before publishing — the structure below shows how a long-form insight renders inside the brand.

Why this matters

Founders tend to optimize for the metric that tells the best story. The job of a finance leader is to make sure the metric that decides your next round is the one you’re actually steering by — and to translate it into a plan the team can act on this quarter.

How to think about it

Start with the question your board will ask, work backward to the few drivers that move it, and build the smallest model that answers it honestly. Precision beats polish: a model people trust at ±5% is worth more than a beautiful one nobody believes.

What I’d do first

Get a single source of truth, reconcile the spreadsheets that disagree, and put one number in front of leadership every week. Visibility is the unlock — almost everything else follows once people can see the same picture.

If any of this is live for your company right now, that’s exactly the kind of thing we’d work through together. A discovery call is the fastest way to find out whether it’s worth bringing me in.

Let’s talk

Bring me in before the round.

A 30-minute discovery call — direct, no pitch. We’ll talk through where you are, what hurts, and whether I’m the right fit. If I’m not, I’ll tell you who is.
